Daniel Bonney and Tyrone Allen spent more than 24 hours trying to find a way back home before relatives in New Orleans came up with the bus fare.
A newspaper ad offered the promise of $700 a week but on Thursday morning they quit their door-to-door sales jobs saying they thought they were deceiving the public.
Tyrone Allen says they were then told, "We're not gonna pay your way home if you don't stay here for a month. You have to find your own way home."
We haven't been able to reach the company that hired them but we did talk with the business that serves as a magazine clearinghouse. That company is American Community Services of Michigan City, Indiana.
Michael Bergerson, the attorney for American Community Services tells us, "We wouldn't want anyone stranded."
Mr. Bergerson says that even though the company doesn't tell the contractors how to do business he hopes, "any of the sales pitches used are truthful and honest."
American Community Services, which has been around since 1979, serves as a magazine clearinghouse. It agrees to process subscriptions for a number of other separate companies such as D&T Connection, the company that hired Tyrone Allen and Daniel Bonney.
It's these companies and their employees that travel the country during the summer selling magazines door-to-door, usually from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Both American Community Services and D&T Connection have satisfactory records with the Better Business Bureau.
The Nebraska Attorney General's office has received 50 complaints statewide this year about door-to-door sales but there have been no specific complaints about the company that hired the two men stranded in Omaha.
Allen and Bonney said they planned to contact the Nebraska Attorney General's office after arriving back in New Orleans.
