I recently had the misfortune of dealing with CHAPEL SALES INC. of COLLINGSWOOD NJ. 08108. Actually a woman came door-to-door selling subscriptions for magazines. She said that if I subscribe magazines through her, she gets certain number of points and if she manages to get 20,000 points she get $1000.00 to go to college.

I looked at the prices and she was giving "American Baby" magazine for $15.00 for 18 months. I had seen some advertisements for "American Baby" for $11.97 for 18 months, and I was planning on subscribing to it anyway, I subscribed through her thinking that it might benefit some student even though I am paying a little bit more.

A couple of weeks later, I get a letter from CHAPEL sales saying that the $15.00 was an advance and I need to pay $20.00 more to have the subscription started. I wrote back to them saying that, since I wasn't told about having to pay $20.00 later, I wanted to cancel my subscription and a refund of the $15.00 dollars.

The reply I got from them goes like this:

According to Federal Trade commission regulation, your request for cancellation has been deneid for one of these reasons -------
1. Your request was not postmarked within 3 days of sale.
2. The order value is under $25.

You will lose your down payment if you don't send in you balance due of $20.00.

The funny thing was that they had not ever processed the order or sent any money to the publisher. If they had sent in the money and started the order it would be a differeny story.

I am going to be losing my $15.00 but I am writing this so that anyone else out there does not get duped by CHAPEL SALES. BOYCOTT THEM.
