FedEx encourages customers to use their "self-service" shipping.

To this end, they often provide discounts for customers who obtain accounts and use the fedex.com web site to ship their packages. This means the customer specifies all the pertinent details of shipping a package, then prints out a label on their printer which is attached to the package. You then just drop off your package at an appropriate drop-off location, and you eventually get billed for the charges.

In the 2006 Christmas season, they were offering a 15% discount for customers who signed up for the discount.

One of the features of the web site is to get an estimate of what the shipping charges will be. You provide the relevant details of the package you're shipping, and whether or not your going to use a FedEx account number. Here's the response you were likely to get:

Cannot validate account at this time. Please try again later.

You might try doing this later, but you would still get the same response. Because from sometime around Thanksgiving 2006 until through the end of December and sometime into January of 2007, according to FedEx customer service), that's the message they provided on any rate quotes specifying that a FedEx account number would be used.
