Davel Communications and its predecessor PhoneTel Technologies

Picking any private payphone service at random, the chances of selecting an upstanding operation are pretty slim. We make no claim that Davel is worse than average, just that it was very annoying to report a problem with one of their phones.

Calling the number 800-259-2254, somebody actually answered. They spoke too fast to be understood, but worse, they couldn't hear me speak when I called from their payphone.

This was a bit strange, given that I could be heard when I called other numbers. Even stranger was that when I called from other phones, they could hear me.

When I finally did speak to someone, she put me on hold with no indication how long it would be, and it was several minutes with no indication that the line had not been dropped.

So we have:

  1. Phones that don't work per their instruction card to start with.
  2. Equipment on both the payphone end and the home office end that evidently doesn't work very well.
  3. Customer service reps who don't know normal telephone procedures.
