Positive Turbulence by Stanley Gryskiewicz, ISBN 0787910082

status: for sale

The gist of this book: You shouldn't reject ideas out of hand just because they involve change. This dramatic insight is clearly worth the price of $0.01 at which this book is often offered at Amazon Marketplace.

The claim is that "traditional organizations" are designed to defend against change, while organizations which adopt the notion of "positive turbulence" seek out new information that may indicate that change is sometimes a good thing.

The book includes a number of examples of how to embrace positive turbulence and its application at specific companies. Such ideas include attending conferences outside your field, joining external organizations, encouraging foreign travel, and switching job functions around.

Positive Turbulence includes references to businesses in diverse industries, such as IBM, Microsoft, Pitney Bowes, General Electric, and Hallmark. Yet, there seems to be a chain of examples about Norfolk Southern, Southern Railway System, and Norfolk & Western Railways. This seems like an anachronism for a book published in 1999, as the Internet Bubble was nearing its peak. Maybe Gryskiewicz realized that following the crowd's rapid change isn't always what it's cracked up to be.
