Frigidaire cited instances in which repair costs on a Frigidaire appliance have been as high as $1052.
Electrolux offers service contracts as a way to manage these costs, but it's questionable that this can help the consumer. For instance, on a dishwasher retailing for approximately $300, the service contract fee during the 2nd through 4th years of ownership if $41.95 per year (and this includes a 10% discount). If Frigidaire allowed this service contract to be extended at this rate to the average 12-year lifetime for dishwashers, the cost of the service contract would come to over $450. This is half again as much as the original cost of the dishwasher.
The best way to deal with this problem is to buy appliances that offer higher reliability, so that the risk of needing to obtain service is low. This is little help to those who already own Frigidaire appliances.
But if service contracts are not the solution, what is?
