KINNELON -- Police are cracking down on illegal soliciting, which they say has become an annual summertime problem.

In a sweep of the borough Thursday, police say, they briefly detained 11 people, charging one for soliciting without a permit and another for driving without insurance.

Those detained and charged worked for Colorado-based Magazine Inc. and Fun Inc. The companies hire young adults around the country and send them out to sell magazine subscriptions, police said. Those who sell the most win prizes, police said.

Group members used a Ford passenger van that was later impounded because its insurance had been cancelled by the company, police said.

The solicitors spread throughout town and approached homeowners about subscriptions, police said. They had not applied for a permit beforehand, which the borough requires, police said.

Police first heard of the solicitors at 1:15 p.m. They finished processing them by 7 p.m., police said.Some group members have had brushes with the law, including one who entered a home with a gun and served two years in jail, police said. They come from eight states and their ages range from 18 to 27, police said.

A Magazine Inc. representative said the company does extensive background checks and that the information the police had was inaccurate.

Police ask that residents contact them at 973-838-5400 if they have been solicited by someone without a permit.
