Salesman accused of battery

Posted December 22, 2005

MOUNT DORA -- Police late Wednesday arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of forcing his way into an apartment after posing as a college student selling magazines.

The man was shooed away from the apartment by a woman wielding a wood board.

Police tracked down Charles Hartman of Roanoke, Va., in Eustis about five hours after the 2:45 p.m. incident at Eudora Grove Apartments on Northland Road.

Hartman was arrested on a charge of battery. Hartman has a history of criminal arrests and convictions on bad checks and other counts, Mount Dora police Lt. Roger Chilton said.

The man knocked on the apartment door and told the woman who answered that he was selling magazines for his college so he could travel to Paris, police said.

When he realized the woman's husband was not home, he forced his way in.

Two children also were in the apartment.

The woman struggled with the intruder and chased him out with the board.

Residents' complaints about solicitors led them to Hartman, Chilton said.

He was one of a dozen sales representatives working in the area for Integrity Sales, an out-of-state company that told police they hire underprivileged young people to give them a second chance.

Willoughby Mariano, Erin Ailworth, Sarah Lundy, Rich McKay, Christopher Sherman and Kristen Reed of the Sentinel staff contributed to this report.

MOUNT DORA -- Police have arrested a man on charges of barging into a woman's home and assaulting her after saying he was selling magazines.

Five hours after the incident Wednesday at Eudora Grove Apartments of Northland Road, police apprehended Charles Hartman, 25, of Virginia.

He told the woman he was a college student selling magazines to pay for a trip to Paris. When the woman told him her husband was not home, Hartman forced his way inside, police said. She struggled with the man and chased him out with a board. Two children were in the home at the time.

Police picked up Hartman after other residents complained about other solicitors selling magazines in their neighborhoods.

He was jailed on charges of burglary and battery and was being held today at the Lake County jail on $25,000 bail.
