Couple Tries to Get Out of $600 Magazine 'Deal'

By Jennifer Julian We all love a good deal. But a Johnston County family's so-called good deal turned out to be not so good. Judy Stephonson tries to keep up on the latest details on America's new war. "A telemarketer called on October first and my husband if he wanted to buy some magazines."

Judy's husband gave International Magazine Service his credit card number for a subscription to US News and World Report. Two other magazines were thrown in free. "$49.23 for 12 months. We assumed it was for a year," Judy said.

The magazines never came, the bill did. And it wasn't what they expected. "$49.83 a month," Judy said.

That was a total of $575 a year. "Who's got 600 dollars for magazines for a year?"

Judy called her credit card company and International Magazine Service. The representative told Judy her husband agreed to the terms. "We've got it on tape. I'd like to hear the tape, he would not play the tape for me."

A local attorney says when Judy's husband gave the company a credit card number, he essentially entered into a contract. But when the company called to confirm, her 16-year-old son answered the phone. "They can't tell it to a 16-year-old who doesn't have authorization to use my credit card."

If the magazines do arrive, Judy plans to send them back to International Magazine Service in California. And she doesn't plan to pay the bill. "If you get telemarketer calls, just hang up the phone very easily."
