The problem I have had is I signed on online with a director from another state because I didn't want someone bugging me all the time. I wanted to sell the products, which I love just to family and friends. Well the gal I signed on under contacted the director in my town, and it became a professional struggle. The director here talked me into getting products from her for a year until my # became invalid and then I could sign under her.
Now my consultant # is invalid but the gal here is making it hard for me to resign unless I agree to do things her way. I have a job in which I work 50-55 hrs a week, so I don't want to go to meetings, etc. She can't understand it. She always wants me to go to her house all the time and go over the products.
I guess the thing that bothers me is, she doesn't give me a paycheck, so why does she think I work for her. She made money off of me. Not alot, but she still did. All I want to do is sell the products in my free time without a lot of pressure. I still haven't signed under her, because I won't relent and do it her way. I don't care about fancy cars, and sparkly jewelry prizes and such. I just like Mary Kay's products and want to make a few extra bucks. Do you have any suggestions?
Signed
Reluctant Consultant
Dear RC:
You're 100% correct. Until this director agrees to pay you for each hour you work, you're not obligated to her. It seems clear that you've explained to her that you do not plan to attend the training sessions or participate in these other "motivational" events, yet it seems that the message hsan't gotten through.
Before I suggest how you handle the situation, I need to ask a couple of questions about your relationship with this director:
If the answer to all of the above questions is "no", then what is she holding over you that prevents you from asserting your rights? It can't be the fact that she's a Mary Kay director, because the only thing that does, with respect to you, is to give her the right to receive credit for purchases you make. She can't tell you what time to wake up in the morning, how many appointments to make per week, or that you must attend any events.
Dealing with this problem will make it difficult to maintain the cheery "Have a Mary Kay day" attitude. You basically need to firmly assert your rights, which includes the right not to receive annoying calls from her.
I'm not sure I understand why you feel the need to "re-sign" under her... if she prevents you from doing that, just call 1-800-MARY-KAY and talk to them. They should be able to sign you up. Am I missing something?
Whether you sign up under her or under another director, if she persists in calling you, urging you to do things you're not interested in, there's a real simple answer: the next time she calls you, ask to be placed on her "do not call" list (this is unrelated to the national Do Not Call list). You can explain to her under the Telemarketing Sales Rule, there is a $500 penalty for each violation of this rule, which is enforced through a private right of action. That means you would file a lawsuit against her in small claims court if she persists in calling you.
You can follow up your request with a certified letter instructing her not to call you.... it's not technically necessary, but the point is to make it clear to her in no uncertain terms that you don't want her pestering you. If she's unable to control herself and calls you anyway, at least one of you will make some pin money from the deal.

First of all, these directors are giving you a load!!!! Perhaps that's not the most eloquent way of stating what they are doing, but it describes it to the level at which it should be.......crap.
I think corporate would frown at the director who wanted you to get products from her for a year....sheesh...they wrote in their magazines that they don't even want consultants trading. I'd call corporate and ask if you they can sign you up under one of the Nationals who doesn't hold meetings, etc or how you can bypass unrelenting directors.
You could also look up the consultant locator and see if there is anyone you know in your area who would appreciate your privacy and let you sign up under them and LEAVE YOU ALONE.
Another thing you can do, like Eli said is not to be intimidated by these women and all that takes is a decision. Keep in mind that they are trained to coerce you til your head spins and you give in to whatever they want from you. Seems you've been there, done that already. They are desperate, most are, to make quotas, production or whatever you want to call it....don't let em get to you, you CAN do this YOUR way. So, whoever you deal with in the future in MK....if they begin getting on your nerves or coercing you into this and that...simply tell them that you will file a complaint with corporate if they do not stop. That'll stop them.
Good luck!
I understand completeley how you feel. The pressuere some consultants put on "potentials" is amazing. NEVER FOR ONE MINUTE feel that you owe them anything. If you want to do Mary Kay then find a consultant who is willing to let you be. DO NOT be their paycheck. There are good consultants out there who understand life is hard, money is short,a sitter is expensive and inventory is not the basis on which the world turns. I keep 100 worth on my shelf becauseI WANT TOO. My recruiter doesn't ask and I don't volunteer how much I have or will have. She doesn't call me- I call her and that's how I am with my off spring. I started my business with my starter kit and thats it and you can too. ALL YOU REALLY NEED IS A BROCHURE TO SELL-----not 20 million AIDES. just a book and a customer. PS. now that you know how it is to be pushed, you'll have more of a sense of how a customer feels when pressured. No one wants to be forced into anything. If you become a consultant please help turn around the opinion perpetuated by these pushy people in mary kay. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS. user tsprout at domain marykay.com
