Questions about Director's Integrity

I have mixed feelings about my director, and would love an unbiased comment. I purchased $150 in product from her, was then presented the consultant info, and less than 48 hours later, signed an agreement. I never received anything from her, not even a free sample, which she laughs about at the weekly meetings. I do receive many useful tips about how to grow the business. However, I find myself really resenting the fact that she has given so many others in my unit extras to get them started - such as $100 in free product, 50% back on what they bought, etc. She is pushing me to let her interview my potential recruits, without me taking place in the interview. In addition, I am unwilling to interview someone immediately after their first purchase, without offering them 50% back, as I don't want them to feel shortchanged like I did. I simply want them to have a week of using the product. In addition, she continues to praise herself at the Monday night meetings, and tonight actually spent 30 minutes talking about how people should be dressed for the meetings. I resented leaving my family for this information that did nothing to help my business. I have an event planned, that took me quite a lot of work, and she would like to attend, as a means of helping me. That would be great, but she intends to leave the event with half of my leads, and any potential recruits from the leads she takes would be her recruits, not mine. In that case, I don't think I need any help! I know that nobody is perfect, and she sure does have good points, but I am trying to find the line, and determine which issues are worth speaking up about, and which are better off dropping. Everytime she brings up the fact that I was a 'warm chatter' who didn't even get a sample for free, it makes me feel ripped off. Well, your thoughts and opinions are appreciated. Thanks.

Emma--

Answering your question doesn't require any special knowledge about Mary Kay... you're dealing with someone with some very negative personality traits.

While it's bad enough that she treats different people differently... though arguably, that's her choice. But what's the point of her constantly reminding you that you were taken advantage of? Humiliating you in front of the other members of the other consultants is over the edge... what positive results can this lead to?

Okay, let me play devil's advocate and try to put a different spin on this... the premise being that Mary Kay is such a great opportunity, but not everybody recognizes this... you recognized it right away. Others were slower and needed some "extra help" to appreciate what Mary Kay had to offer.

I don't know if that seems at all credible. However, it seems unlikely to me that confronting her about the things she does that bother you is going to lead to a good working relationship.

I would suggest distancing yourself from her... use her as a resource only to the extent that it's absolutely necessary... maybe this will be difficult, but it will be less difficult that trying to work with her.

Emma: Eli is right. She has some very negative character issues and I would truly stay away from her, that is, you and anyone you contact about Mary Kay. And, she wants to meet with your contacts without you being there? Shouldn't she insist you be there for 'training'?

Sounds like you have a feeling of caution about her and from what you say, I think those feelings are valid. Beware.

Emma,

I would agree that your director is trouble. Any person you bring in front of your director should be your recruit. You should also be included in the interviews for training. I have been a consultant for over 2 years and I have never heard of a director trying to take your recruits. Your leads are your leads, period. Also, a director should never try to take anything out of the appointments she does with you. She is there to help you and is "paid" in commissions from the company. We don't pay our directors in the form of leads or recruits or at all! I would suggest that you find an adoptive director in the area and go to her meetings instead. You can always tell your director that Monday nights aren't good for you. It sounds like your director is greedy and someone you want to distance yourself from. MK offers a great opportunity, so don't let it go because of one bad apple! And so you know, most people don't get a lot when they join MK. My director gave me a sample satin hands as my gift. I think it is so great that you already know how you want to run your business. Interviewing people as soon as you meet them doesn't lead to good team members, I know from experience! So your director should respect your decision to run your business the way you want to, no matter what that decision is!

Emma,

My director, who will be my ex-director in about a week, sold me the $299 roll-up bag the first evening at the skin-care class I attended. She very casually asked me before I left if I thought that this would be something I would be interested in - I said NO! Unfortunately, when she called me at home later in the week and gave me her "I've been challenged by my director to share the facts of this company with you and I'm SO EXCITED!" speech, I fell for it. I found in my year's time that my director never stole a recruit from me, but she did want to call them all herself and see if she could persuade them to overcome any objections to following the MK dream. She also wanted to, as she put it, "get in their space." This insures her of the best opportunity to sell them on the MK 'opportunity.' I asked her one time why it was that I bought the entire set and then paid to get 50% off afterwards and she told me we sell, book, and recruit in that order. She had no problem telling me to tell my potential recruits that I would give them $100 in free product on top of their starter kit to join. Needless to say, I am VERY disillusioned with MK - I so wish that I hadn't answered the phone a year ago when she called. One other thing to watch for is what your director will tell your potential recruits when she interviews them. Some things are not presented in ways that you might object to if you were there with her at the interview, or she may misrepresent your earnings in MK. If your director has not already started in on you about getting your inventory up to star level, be advised she will. Oops, now that I read back over your original question I saw that you want an unbiased comment. My apologies, I am biased against MK because of my experience in it.
