Be picky on who and how you receive sales training

This is a great forum and I enjoy reading all the perspectives and can relate them to my experiences. Just passed 12th year as a Mary Kay consultant and have worked it with a full time job. The purpose of this information is to let others know it is very important to find directors that you can work with based on your level of professional interest in MK sales, team building, etc. Meetings are voluntary and whether you go to your personal director’s meeting or not you have a choice. Do not feel trapped wanting to learn how to advance in the business, but something just isn’t jiving with the philosophy you being taught. I have had the wonderful opportunity to have learned the basics of the company. My director has slowly but steadily moved into having several offspring directors one of whom is very successful and have been personally taught from the finest. In the past 4 yrs my director whom I respect and work well with one on one has started being very what I call “fluffy” at the weekly success meetings and in general MK business outlook. Typically the meeting information has very little substantiation of how to run the business regardless of the topic. It is filled with the same repeated I stories and MK marketing with no guests present. Note that there are several directors there. I have tried the feedback method and it has been met with blank stares and how can I even mention any changes. As a successful star consultant with my ladder filled up and knowledge has been gained on how to manage inventory. My comments made in strict business confidence with my director were not welcome after a large guest event went completely awry with my guest caught up as one of the sacrificial “spring lambs”.

I decided to go to another meeting and my eyes have been opened to the sales strategies once again. I thought at first it was just because I am going to a different meeting. Ladies it makes a difference to hang out with. Directors that fit your style. Now it is great to have sales directors that have participated in the queens court of sales and hold current company records. One gal her personal sales are 4700.00 this month of June 05 alone so far and that is solely with her customers calling in their orders! Based on 2 weeks advance preparation. She learned how to sell from Mary Kay directly as her sales qualified for personal training as it was done maybe 25 yrs ago.

Here is what I notice, they:

So if you are interested in selling cosmetics, or already a MK rep. compatibility is important and respect becomes mutual. Teaming up with someone that you can learn from is natural part of life. Rather than faulting my director because her idea of how to teach others has changed and is not my style, and getting into negative aspects, I have chosen to move on. Sure she makes money on my production and I don’t care.

Others do care about directors making commissions on them when there are problems, I respect that and respect those who quit MK and those who patiently wait a year to change directors.

$4,700 per month x 12 months = $56,400 yearly sales

Profit of 40% on that IF SHE'S LUCKY

40% profit = $22,560 per year

As a full time job??? No thanks. Isn't that close to poverty level?
