Mary Kay is a business just like any other retail business, you cannot expect to "sell" a product if you do not have it in inventory, would you open a shoe store, bridal boutique with out inventory, can you expect to open a restaurant without an inventory of food to sell?
There are women who come into Mary Kay that don't understand important basic business elements - it requires work, it requires being a good student (going to your weekly success meetings), it requires discipline and it requires integrity - the same elements that are required of any other small business if it is to be successful. To bad this cagey consumer isn't mature enough to under these basic business elements!
Mary Kay is a dual marketing company, consultants buy direct from Mary Kay Cosmetics, there is no required level of inventory that you must buy to have in stock to sell to your customer base. The only requirement is that you place a $400.00 retail order which equals $200.00 wholesale order to the company once every 11 months, doing so continues to make you eligible to buy your cosmetics, skin care, body care, fragrances etc. at a 50% discount.
I have a number of women on my team who love the product but had no desire to build a customer base, so for $113.95 (State of KY - incls tax & S/H) they are able to buy their beauty products at a 50% discount for the rest of their life, and for that initial $100.00 investment they received a starter kit that included sales aids and sample products (valued at over $300.00), plus full size products retailing $147.00 (TimeWise and Velocity skin care sets, Day and Night Solution, Mascara, Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover and Oil Mattifier) not a bad deal!
I often wonder how many women would line up at the cosmetics counter of our in store competitors if they ran a special like that - for a $100.00 fee you can buy all your beauty products at 1/2 price for the rest of your life - you better believe the stores would not be able to handle the crowd of women! And, most importantly, if you have decided that you no longer want to run your business selling Mary Kay, you can ship your inventory back to the company and Mary Kay Cosmetics will reimburse you on all product that you purchased from them within the past year - I don't believe there is any other company or franchise that is willing to take a 90% loss on their entrepreneurs - but Mary Kay does!
If you choose to return your product to the company you can NEVER do the business again simply because the company has taken a loss on you, I would guess that is why women might have product in their basement collecting dust because at this point and time in their life they do not possess the necessary business skills or the desire to turn the product around into cash and figure maybe at some other point and time they will!
