I fully agree with you. I have been a beauty consultant for almost two months now and I chose not to start out with inventory, although I wish I could have started with inventory. I have had several successful skin care classes and any help or demo products that I need, my director is there to supply. I am not the normal woman that enters this business, since I come from a long history of working for a major department store cosmetic line. I have always wanted to have my own line of cosmetics, but since I don't have at least 10 million dollars lying around, I chose this direction. You have to get up and get out in order to be successful. Even inside the department stores you have to bring in customers. That is why you see all those gifts with purchase, purchase with purchase and events. I was a counter manager and it was up to me, to bring in customers. Yes you did have some loyal customers, but they don't out number the fickle one's. It is a battle field in there. Between the store you are employed by and the cosmetics company, constantly on your back to make sales or your job is on the line, you have no life and always stressed out. Now I have a more balanced life (1 husband, 2 kids) and don't have to work all holidays and every weekend. I did have to create the same income that I had while being a counter manager, which was easy by just holding 2-3 classes per week. I say all this to make the point, that there is no easy get rich quick way. You get out of life what you put into it. Bill Gates didn't just wake-up one day and boom, I'm a billionare. He got out there and promoted his product.

Way to go, & good for you! I agree completely. I have only been a consultant for less than a month. I have my 1st recruit & 3 others that are very interested. I didn't even approach most of them. They noticed me & my Mary Kay pin , then started asking questions. I have found that just by looking my best & wearing my pin, Prospective recruits & customers fall in to my lap. The support, training, & recognition in Mary Kay is unbelievable. I have tried many other sales company's & they did not offer any where near what M.K. does.

I don't know what the person who wrote the article Personal Experience: Mary Kay Cosmetics at http://www.cageyconsumer.com/mlm/marykay.html was doing when she says she was working her but off, because if she would have utilized all the training, advice & support that I have, given by every Mary Kay consultant I've ever met, she would have done great. I too came in with a very small inventory of about 650 and it's already almost gone. I really wish I could have taken the ( no pressure advice ) & come in with a full inventory. I have no doubt that my sales would be better. I know these products sale them selves. At my first 2 facials I bumbled through them & didn't even give them half the information I needed to, & still had 212 in sales. I have received complete support, recognition, & encouragement even though I didn't order 3,000 in product.

I ALSO agree with you guys- I have been in Mary Kay for almost a year and I have had nothing but positive experiences. I only work my business part time but have already sold about $5000 worth of product. I too disagree with the sour grapes woman who apparently doesn't want to work for a living and probably thinks the world owes her. Funny how people don't ever want to pay their dues when starting something new. -- BetsyN web search for BetsyN - 23 Jun 2002

It sounds like you are someone who could not follow through. I know what this company has done for me and my family and it did take working my butt off and then some and it was all worth it. The only reason product sets in basements and collects dust is because of an unwillingness upon the consultants part to follow what has been tried and true for almost 40 years. If someone maxes out their credit cards purchasing product, yet sets on their rear end and does not move the product just to get a prize, it sounds to me like that is the consultants fault and not the fault of the company. The company rewards us for doing our job, and if we choose not to do our job, we have to find someone to blame and that is usually not the true person responsible -- ourselves. Lastly, if the marketing plan "stinks" so badly, why is it taught at Harvard? Your attitude is pathetic and I am thankful you are not on my team.

I have noticed the same thing, far as consultants buying large quantities of merchandise then not being able to sell it. Luckily I did not buy large quantities. I do have a starter kit. I liked going to the training classes mainly meeting people. The kit itself was a gift, from someone else. You have to gradually get into whatever business you may be interested in. Thats the smart tactic, to investigate and gain any information before jumping.

I am a new consultant with the company and I felt no pressure to join. I have used the products for over 20 years and it is to sell something you use.

It is fun and I love seeing women step-out to achieve so much. We (women) have worked very hard for years and we put ourselves last. Mary Kay's fantasy Cinderella gifts allows us to have the desires of our heart without feeling guilty. I started with a postdated check and a boat load of enthusiasm. I have pushed candy, gift wrapped, raffle tickets, frozen pizzas, etc., etc., for my kids various activities. Finally I am selling something for myself. And if I want to stop, I can still purchase for my immediate family. That alone would be over $500 a year. Mary Kay is what you make it. Each Director is different. You know your financial picture better than anyone, don't allow yourself to be intimidated.
