I just happened to run across your "story" on the internet. And I just wanted to say...THANK YOU!!! I just started Mary Kay about 2 weeks ago, and I had the awful experience of attending their weekly class after I got in. The woman in charge of my district has been doing nothing but trying to get me to buy inventory. After I told her that would be something that I would have to think about, told me through a friend that she would give me a "free" cruise for any time this year.

I don't even want to know all the loop holes that are involved with that. It's very discouraging all the awful things that are going on in what could be a great business. I've personally choosen to just buy a very small amount of things and try to sell what I have and reorder only when I have a client base who I know will buy up the products I have. It was a great testimony reading your page.

If you have any help ideas for me,...or anything else you would like to share on this matter, I would love to discuss!! Thanks for your words.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience & felt pressured. Keep in mind that they are only telling you what they think will help you be most successful. The reason they push so hard on your initial inventory purchase is that you get so much free product that isn't available to you after your 2nd month as a consultant.

When I joined almost a year ago I wasn't given the inventory speech. I wish I had heard it. I have been doing what you're plan is and as my business has started to take off (I was planning my wedding so I was mainly personal use) I realized that it was inefficient & not very cost effective for me to be placing orders all the time & then having to deliver it. I also recently attended a training class where we learned how to do the inventory appointment (no pressuring) and was sitting there thinking..."God, I wish I had ordered more product when I first started." I think about the amount of my first major inventory purchase and think about all that I could have gotten for free had I done this during my first 2 months, even if I couldn't start building my business until after my wedding 4 months later.

Now, your Success meeting should not be an aweful experience. And it shouldn't be about pushing you to purchase inventory. Our meetings are focused on pampering our guests & training our consultants in areas such as booking & formats of different classes. And they are VERY positive.

I hope this helps. Don't get discouraged. Try talking to your director and telling her that you don't like being pressured and this pressure, which is not mentioned anywhere in Career Essentials (which you should listen to if you haven't already), is turning you away from the business. Tell her that you will be successful and if she wants you as part of her team, and wants you to place big inventory orders, then she should be helping you build a customer base & get your inital bookings (ie hosting your debut, & teaching you how to hold successful classes) rather than pressuring you which will only ultimately lead to you leaving the company and having/spreading a negative experience to others. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hello all! I too am a Mary Kay Skin Care Consultant. My experience w/directors, ect has not been the most fun, however I make the best out of MY BUSINESS. I don't get involved in the incentives, etc. I became a consultant to own my own business, enrich the lives of other women, and to add to the income of our household. I do things at MY OWN PACE. For some, purchasing large inventory is the way to go. If you have a large circle of friends and family who are interested in Skin Care and Cosmetics, your inventory will go quickly. I've seen it happen. If not, TAKE YOUR TIME because it's YOUR BUSINESS!! :-) I didn't purchase inventory when I first began. A few months into being a consultant, I placed a $200 order!! Just enough to remain active. And that worked for me. I understand the importance of having inventory on hand. And I do purchase additional product to my sales so that I can have product on hand. I tell all of my potential recruits to familiarize themselves with their customer base prior to purchasing large inventory. I have "other" plans for my business, and Mary Kay is going to help me get there. Look past the personalities, and look into what you can make out of being a skin care consultant. Mary Kay should enrich your life, not tear down families, values, and make you disgruntled! If you would like to know how to become a successful business owner, please feel free to contact me at user dolivia at domain marykay.com. Stay encouraged!
