Mary Kay tries to act like it is so different from all the other Direct Sales-Home Party Plan companies, but they all essentially operate the same way. No one makes any significant amount of money without pulling others in and building a big downline. Recruiters try to act like signing up with Mary Kay is going to empower women in some way - PLEASE. Stop insulting our intelligence. All it does is empower the corporate office and a few national directors at the top of the chain.
But, perhaps Mary Kay IS different from other plans - different in that they encourage women to go into debt to buy inventory, not knowing whether or not the women will be able to sell it. How unethical is that? At least most other Direct Sales companies work on the basis of placing and delivering orders. To those who would argue that no one is "forced" to buy inventory, this is true. But, when women are coerced into buying inventory based on hype and rhetoric from sales directors, that's just wrong - plain and simple, something that should be obvious to a company who has "God First" in their motto.
I personally have had a change in my way of thinking about Home Party Sales in general. Why should I have a Mary Kay party (or any other home party - Pampered Chef, Longaberger, fill-in-the-blank party) and invite friends over so "I" can get free stuff? That is "using" my friends and I refuse to host parties or attend them anymore.
