Tenth Judicial District
OFFICE OF DISTRICT ATTORNEY
Paul J. Morrison, District Attorney Consumer Protection Division
PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From: Paul Morrison
Date: March 4, 2003
(Olathe, KS) The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office filed an enforcement suit today under the Kansas Consumer Protection Act against two companies selling door to door magazine subscriptions in Johnson County during the summer of 2001 and 2002. The District Attorney’s Office had received approximately 33 complaints from consumers who had purchased magazines from Ultimate Power Sales, Inc., and United Family Circulations, Inc., both companies are based out of Georgia.
District Attorney Paul Morrison states, “The companies used deceptive sales pitches in order to induce potential customers to make a purchase.” During the investigation it was learned that the companies use door to door crews that target upper class subdivisions telling consumers that theywere from the neighborhood, and they are selling books or magazines to raise funds for a school sports trip, charity or in some cases a well-known local hospital. Not onlywere misrepresentations made with regard to endorsements, but improper three-day door to door cancellation notices were given to consumers during the transaction.
If you or someone you know has been a victim of this sales scam, please call the
Johnson County District Attorney’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 913-715-3003.
