Teen pleads not guilty to assault

By Ethan Fletcher | Staff Writer

MENLO PARK -- A traveling salesman accused of beating and attempting to rape an 80-year-old woman in Menlo Park entered a plea of not guilty on Friday.

D'Angelo Langford, 19, from Georgia, entered his plea through his court-appointed private defender in Superior Court in Redwood City. Langford's bail remained at $500,000, however he is under a no-bail status stemming from an outstanding arrest warrant from Georgia for assault with a handgun.

Langford is charged with several felony counts including burglary, attempted rape, assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment of an elder.

According to Menlo Park police, Langford was dropped off, along with several other employees, by a magazine sales company on the evening of Oct. 6. Langford then allegedly forced his way into an unidentified elderly woman's home along the typically quiet 900 block of Arnold Lane in Menlo Park.

A neighbor interrupted the attack when he heard the woman's screams, forcing the suspect to flee in a white van. Langford was arrested hours later in Palo Alto. It was revealed in court that Langford allegedly threatened to kill the victim when she attempted to call police.

Deputy District Attorney Mary Alhiser revealed little more information regarding the case or Langford, except to say that Menlo Park police are still investigating to see if Langford is suspected in other crimes in any other parts of the country. It is believed the magazine sales company traveled from state to state.

Alhiser said the victim was released from the hospital and is currently receiving medical care. A mug shot of Langford was not being released because the elderly victim must still pick him out of a lineup.

Langford's next court appearance on Nov. 3 will be used to schedule further hearings.
