A 19-year-old Georgia man accused of assaulting an elderly Menlo Park woman inside her apartment will face a trial for the alleged crime, San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Thomas McGinn Smith ruled today. D'Angelo Langford, a roving magazine subscription solicitor, allegedly attacked the 80-year-old victim around 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 6.

The woman, identified in court as Maryann, testified this morning about what she could remember from the attack in her apartment in the 900 block of Alice Lane.

Maryann said she had gone to her back door that evening to empty a pot of water from a broken water heater. "There was this person in the doorway,'' she said.

"He moved in, grabbed me. I started to scream for help,'' she said. The man pushed Maryann through the kitchen and toward her bedroom, striking her along the way. "He whipped me on both sides of the head,'' Maryann said, making punching gestures with her fists. "It's very fuzzy from there on.''

Maryann said she only remembers "bits and pieces'' of the assault. She said the man forced her onto her bed and attempted to push up her blouse. Maryann recalled pushing her legs against the man to get off the bed. "I must have been up because I got hit in the head a number of times after that,'' she said. When she regained awareness she was on the floor and the front door was open, Maryann testified.

Neighbor Denise Weinert heard Maryann screaming for help across the alleyway that separates her apartment from Maryann's. Weinert said she heard "scuffling'' and "groaning'' before yelling across the fence to see if Maryann was OK. Weinert retrieved her cell phone before going to Maryann's front door and pounding loudly. She recalled, "I yelled, Maryann, are you OK?''

It was then that Langford allegedly answered the door. "I said, 'I'm going to call the police, you better get out of here,''' Weinert said. The man fled on foot and Weinert chased the man while talking to police on her cell phone, Weinert testified.

An investigation revealed that Langford might have been dropped off in the neighborhood by van.

Langford was arrested around 11 p.m. that evening in Palo Alto after officers discovered a van and a man matching the suspect's description. Weinert was taken to Palo Alto and identified Langford as the man she saw leave Maryann's apartment.
